ACCRINGTON STANLEY’S SUPPORTERS CLUB AWARDED £48K FROM HERITAGE LOTTERY

Accrington Stanley Supporters Club is pleased to announce that it has been awarded £48,000 from Heritage Lottery to run a project looking at the fans history of the club.  The project, entitled THE CLUB THAT WOULDN’T DIE will take a year to realise and will involve the whole town.

The project will culminate in an exhibition, education resource, workshops, community talks and events, CDs and a celebratory event.  The aim of the project is to support Accrington Stanley, to promote the club and the supporters club and to generally create a feeling of excitement and positivity around the town and club.

To be successful the supporters club is hoping that the whole town will become involved and support the project.  To make this project a success the supporters club need volunteers to come forward to help out.  Volunteers will be asked to either train to take oral histories, or they will get involved with collecting and collating photos and memorabilia or they will be asked to steward the exhibition or take people on trips.  All volunteers will get full training in whichever role they choose to undertake.

We also need supporters to come forward and tell us their stories and share with us their photographs.  We want to hear about fans favourite matches and about special events in their life that coincide with matches.  We want to hear from fathers who were absent from their children’s births because they HAD to be at a match or about couples who changed the time of their wedding because of a kick off or about fans who’s fathers took them to see their first match when they were very young.  All of these stories, and many more, are important to the project.

Chairman of the supporters club, Rob Russell said:  This is a very exciting project for us and is something that should really get the community involved.  We hope to talk to Supporters of all ages and get their perspective of Stanley history down on record for future generations to read or listen to.

Chairman of Accrington Stanley, Eric Whalley said:  This is fantastic news for Accrington Stanley, and will get the whole town talking about the football club.  We have a great and famous  history and the project should help to spread the word about Stanley and hopefully reignite local interest in the club which in turn helps us to build a great future.
